Mallorca is a destination for wine lovers

Spain is famous worldwide for its wine industry. Regions like Rioja and Ribera del Duero are known for their Tempranillo production. What is relatively unknown is that the Majorcan wine industry is rebuilding itself after a few ill-fated centuries. The delicious bottles are attracting new kinds of travelers to the island and are becoming more popular in the rest of the world. There is a small but growing number of Majorcan wineries that are producing impressive wines from varieties largely indigenous to this Mediterranean island. Since properties in Mallorca are about 10 times more expensive than on the mainland, the Majorcan wineries are concentrating on quality instead of quantity. The most widely planted wines on the island are Manto Negro, others include Fogoneu, Prensal Blanc (or Moll) and Giró Blanc. The oldest winery on the island, Hereus de Ribas, is located in an old estate in Binissalem. It produces a range of wines, including a standout red, Ribas de Cabrera, which has a blend of Syrah, Manto Negro and Cabernet Sauvignon. Other restaurants featuring the best wines from every significant producer in Mallorca are Es Molí d´en Bou in St. Llorenç des Cardassar on the eastern edge of the island and Palma’s Lo di Vino.
